Johannes Winkler (1984, Black Forest) is a German composer, media artist, and consultant based in Essen. His work operates at the intersection of contemporary music, text, image, and code. Alongside his compositional practice, Winkler initiates collaborative networks and ensembles, develops transmedia art forms, gives lectures, and works as a consultant in research contexts and for agencies. His practice connects artistic, technological, and cultural systems through experimental formats and transdisciplinary approaches.
He is a prizewinner of the international Sound Art Award Marx.Music (Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, UK) and of the ZKM (Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe) SuperCollider Code Marathon. His works and lecture-performances have been presented nationally and internationally, including at Musica Acoustica Beijing, ZKM Karlsruhe, Fournos Center Athens, Stadtmuseum Simeonstift Trier, JOE Festival Essen, and Ya-Festival Borbeck.
In 2018, inspired by Rafael Reina’s PhD thesis, he founded Netzwerk Konnakol Deutschland together with Konnakol and Mridangam master Anushaant Nayinai Wijayan. Within this framework, he established the Tupletmachine™ Lab for hypercultural rhythm research, where he develops experimental live music formats, educational and performance software, and innovative workshops.
Winkler studied (algorithmic) composition at Folkwang University of the Arts Essen with Dirk Reith, as well as with Thomas Neuhaus, Günter Steinke, and Roman Pfeifer.
